IPv4 is the current IP address format, IPv4 is a 32-bit address space represented by a set of four numbers which range from 0 up to 255 separated by periods. The format with IPv4 this really only allows for around 4 Billion IP address’s. Which in the near future will most likely will run out! To resolve this IPv6 is going to eventually replace IPv4. IPv6 is a 128-bit address, this should allow around 340 Undecillion (lookup the number) different address’s. The format will change from 127.0.0.1 (IPv4) to something about like this; 32fr:y9:1d4r:0:fe97:ee:2ra:2b3a (IPv6). If your really interested in this, you can visit ipv6.org for more information.
