notepad++ is a coding version of dreamweaver. it highlights certian code in different colours, allows multiply opening of pages etc etc. you do need to select the type of doc before the colours appeal.
i like it and often use it, especially on my laptop which is a bit slow of it takes ages to boot dreamweaver. i doubt you would be able to find a free software similar to dreamweaver but you could try the beta version of windows expressions. i posted - http://www.webberscorner.com/Software-fo...tml#pid327
haven't tried it but it is meant to be the equivelant of dreamweaver.

PSPad is something like notepad++, i've never tried it, but i heard it's good also, i'm using notepad++ rightnow. i might give pspad a try, but i think they're just about equal.
if you want a free WYSIWYG editor, nvu (http://www.nvu.com/) it's popular and (/because?) it's open source.
personally i don't code anything atm. i used to use both notepad++ and dreamweaver. now i'm trying focus on my graphic skills, so no coding this year i guess.

WYSIWYG editor, yuck!
stick to coding if you want to build a site. the coding will be a lot cleaner.

but it takes a lot more time if you don't have much experience. i think the best way is to build your site in WYSIWYG editor, so you have the main structure, then editing the codes afterwards.

I use HTML-kit, it's similar to dreamweaver kinda but w/ less features. You can update it and download plug-ins through the website to customize it and keep it up to date.

I code in gedit and Nvu.
gedit is a Linux notepad, and it highlights differently for different languages.

What about Coffee Cup editors offered for free in this site http://www.coffeecup.com/html-editor/?
You can try them or search for a coding software, I think it's even better to create sites using them, since you will get a cleaner code.
