Mine was Yahoo Web Hosting.
I used GeoCities then saw they offered paid hosting, so I went for it. But then I switched to other hosts.
I first started using GeoCities, then I went to cPanel hosting a place called, TalkHost
i started with using geocities too.
i then moved to several free hosts with no luck.
i then used
http://www.real-hosts.co.uk which were ok but the downtime was a big issue.
i then moved to miniserve.co.uk who were also ok but had to move because they didn't offer what i wanted.
i am now with
http://www.a2b2.com and they are great and would recommend them to anyone.
I never heard of a2b2, they have some good prices for VPS. I might consider them for future projects.
I see that their support is very active, which is an issue with various hosts.
Mine was Site5.
Impressed with them last time. Now, not anymore.

Yeah it is cheaper, but you have to make sure your internet provider allows it. It's against some ISP's terms of service to run your own server, even if it's a personal FTP. If they find out you might get your account closed.
However, that option is not for everyone, especially to new webmasters that struggle in Cpanel.

Totally got ripped, that is the problem being a newbie. you get ripped off!
Now i am with my trusty blacknight hosting which is a treat and has great support and verrry cheap!
