Back when I got my ME PC in ~2001, it came with only 32MB DDR RAM!
Now, most computers come with at least 256MB - 512MB DDR 2RAM. The middle priced ones come with 512MB DDR2. That seems to be the standard amount of RAM, but is it really? 256 will freeze if you run about 3 programs under Windows XP, and forget about Vista if you only got 256!
Even 512 is a bit choppy at times.
Until I got 1GB DDR2, I really had smooth performance.
How about you? I'm assuming the same amount of RAM might run better on non-Window OS. Linux ran well with 256. And it's even possible to run Linux at a pretty good speed with 128MB ran using DamnSmallLinux. Which would not happen in Windows, unless you ran Win 95 or 3.1 lol.
i have read reviews which say 1gb is the least for vista and recommended is 2gb ram.
i haven't seen a new computer with less than a 1gb mainly because vista is very thirsty when it comes to ram.
i run 1gb of ram in most of my maches, but for the ones that need that extra, they are fully packed up with a minimum of 4gb, some have 7GB
1GB of ram really does seem to be the standard now, silly thing is Vista really relies on that extra ram and you wont get overly far without it. One of the reasons I can safely say I will not be upgrading to vista. Definetly not worth the money.
I always put 1gb+ into any machine I build just so they last a bit longer with all these new ram hungry programs.

it gets worse for me because I run programs such as photoshop and dreamweaver which are very heavy on RAM so 1gb can just get me by in XP so I bet I will need 2gb for Vista. Iam getting a laptop shortly and trying to find decent 2gb ram laptops its hard as they are all 1gb.
I am now looking at mac minis as an alternate

will a mac mini run photoshop, itunes, dreamweaver, firefox off a gig of ram well? i am considering getting one.
Id say yes the mac would be okay with it. OSX is alot less demanding with ram in my experience. You should be able to run photoshop perfectly okay as long as you have a decent proccesor as well, what are you getting a G5?
you can't get G5 now.
I was looking looking at mini mac superdrive with 1gb ram - http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/...lm=Macmini
You cant get the G5's anymore? first ive heard.
Yeh Im sure that should be able to run all the programs you listed, seems expensive though in comparison, Im sure you could get much better witha windows alternative for the price. Or are you set on a mac?
G5, that isn't the intel core ones is it?
I am far from set to a mac, i really want a laptop with vista. I love the sony one - http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProductC...N+N+Series but it only comes with 2x512mb ram and i really think i will need 2gb. which means upgrading both sticks
I am just looking at my options and i love the macs but the laptops are too expensive.

G5's where discountinued in early 2006, late 2005.
@ gleezone, well most major games are available for Mac, but not all. WarCraft 3 for example was available on Mac. And a lot of open source games are usually ported to Mac as well, however, as you said Macs are intended for gaming, well Windows games anyway.
