Hi,

I have finally got my hands on a spare PC and going to give Linux a whiz on it.

I know of Ubuntu OS but are there any others which are worth a try?  btw, they have to be freeTongue

Thanks

Dave
Heard lots of good things about Ubuntu.
Although I tried it myself and couldn't even install it.

I am running ubuntu at the moment while posting this and I must say i am very impressed with it.

If all my software such as photoshop, itunes and dreamweaver was supported with it I would move across to it.

The only way linux will become a big competitor is if that happens.

I have problems installing but found out it was to do with the way i was burning the disk.  you have to burn an ISO image on the disk, not a normal disk.

I use Ubuntu, it's very nice. You can run windows applications on wine. It's an open source program to run windows programs on UNIX (linux, mac os x etc.) My favorite part: 100% microsoft free code.

Actually programs such as Wine won't work on Mac OS X, as that is built from Darwin and Linux is not.

Fedora is the one i have used the most.

I hate to prove you wrong, but I'm using it as we speak, on OS X.

No, Linux is not built from darwin. The Darwin Kernel was created for the OS X operating system from UNIX, just like Linux was created by Linus Torvalds from UNIX, which gives them this common root.

As for wine for the major distros of Linux (including Ubuntu) and solaris, it can be found here.

does it matter which linux OS you pick?  will all the software run on all of them?
i have tried ubuntu and have it on my dual boot.

was going to try gento but it seemed complicated for a beginner in linux.

i am really impressed with ubuntu but the only thing holding me back is its lack of support with dreamweaver, photoshop, itunes Sad
try suse, more user friendly
