nice work gaz.  i wasn't sure what happened to begin with but then i got addicted and frantically trying to make white space which is obviously impossible because for everyone i remove another 5 or so come up! lol.

Almost cleared half of it

i got a quarter and found the trick is to clear them slowly, not fast.

You'll always have 1 block left (well, actually a bunch of blocks on the same place I believe).
But it'll take some time!
A doing it slowly is indeed the best way

note everytime your remove one block several more appear.

thats what you think there is never more than 3000, and never less than 3000 squares.
