What's the advantage of having a favicon?  Is it something to do with SEO?

neither.

it just makes your site look nicer.  also note it doesn't work with IE6 to lower.

it is useful when in firefox because when you have several tabs up it allows you to quickly skip to it as you have a visual.

it will also add it to the bookmarks.

but for seo it won't do anything, it is purely a visual extra.

I agree, it doesn't have any other use more than make your site look nicer and people remember it for the favicon you have in your site.
