I use Zonealarm for my firewall and avg for my antivirus. to be honest i normally just cancel the avg test because it slows the pc down a it.
i also find avg doesn't seem to pick up a lot of the viruses and miss a lot, seems to have slipped lately. I may well give aVast a try.
Do macs need firewall and antivirus software gaz?

it has a built in anti-virus system which is updated neguarly, and protects against the very few virus's
every computer should be behind a firewall, wether or not it is a pc, Mac, Linnx of sun system.

AVG Free, pretty good, good enough for my needs.

I got Norton with my Dell PC but a few months later I had a problem after updating Norton for a few days booting up. Eventually I used the error report facility to Microsoft and got back an instant reply that the error was Symantec related. A day later another update from Norton sorted out the problem. I lost confidence in Norton and when the free year ran out I got AVG free.
I've had AVG ever since; it has found viruses - all from floppy discs from my sister-in-law or her children!

How do you know? a virus could get in, and norton might not even knw about it, and then your infected.

no anti virus can protect you from all viruses, it is impossible.
you will often find them missing viruses but because most people only run one anti virus the virus will just sit there waiting.

He said "bad [censored] viruses" which I would assume he meant the ones with very severe and noticeable side effects

It takes time from someone reporting a virus for AV companies to get hold of it, test it, find a cure and put that in AV definitions and for the viewer to download AV updates, probably two days at least which means viruses can get in before you have the cure.

norton is good, i've it installed on my laptop. on my pc's i have kaspersky antivirus running. i've tried lots of anti virus softwares before (nod32, avg, avast, antivir, bitdefender, .) but i like kaspersky's the most, simply because it has a nice GUI and is not so annoying.
