Hi,
I need resource for understanding how to use RSS. I realize it's a link thing and I guess it can update automatically.
Whenever I click on an RSS link, all I can see is the x file. Looks like jibber.
Who knows of a good tutorial they can share?
u need a rss reader to read it, if you see a bunch of gibberish. I know Firefox does not support it on its older versions, in version 2 they now support it. (Just check it out today)
RSS is used for to reduce code and make it easy to read. Pretty much any blog/news/post can be set as an RSS format, as long as they have the code in place. Instead of reading the post from the site, and dealing with different font and colours, RSS use a standard font, size and puts it into black and white formate. This makes it easier to read and save the loading time.
I don't recommend small sites to include RSS, neither do i recommend everyone to use RSS Reader, if you are a very large site or u are a very avid reader, then yes.
Opera has a built in RSS Reader too
it works like this: there is a file (xml) on the root address of the site which has RSS feature, that file will be automatically updated to the content of the site, it contains only one kind of info, like at news sites, only the articles, those will be managed sothat you can see a list of titles, and when you select it, you'll be able to read the content.
RSS readers basically just download that file and read it (translate from xml to normal layout) for you. i don't know which RSS reader is good, but i recommand to use the built in reader if you use a browser which has it built in
Yes I am using it. It works smooth and silently. On a set time period I get the RSS feeds from the sources set up by me. Opera works like a RSS reader.
Aside from the browsers, how do you read this? Is there just a plug in for the browser and that's the way to see it? If so, how do I put it in Internet Explorer?
y don't u just use Mozilla Firefox or Opera, they have it built in.
They're free too
Make sure its version 2.0 of FireFox!

some works as plugin in IE some runs as an independent application. just install it and you'll find out. you don't have to do anything with IE most of RSS readers will configure itself. some will work as a toolbar (can be compared to google toolbar)
rss is pretty much a summary of data that gets collected on a regular basis
If you don't want to use a built-in browser feature, you can try a dynamic homepage like Netvibes, Pageflakes, Google Pages, Live, Protopage, Webwag, etc.
I personally use
Netvibes and would be completely lost without it. I subscribe to close to a hundred feeds, including podcasts. You can categorize them with tabs, e.g., Tech News, World News, Podcasts, Blogs, Flickr. Really anything you want. The best thing is you can access it from any computer.
