would you consider Google a monopoly(not the board gameParanoid)?

They seem to be purchasing different internet based companies everyday.

Are there even regulations on how powerful an internet company can get since it is international?  I guess this could also be similar to the Online Gambling controversy.

I think google IS a monopoly, but since they do not sell anything it really isn't a problem.Ninja

EDIT: Here's an interesting article on the topic, if anyone was interested.

And did you know if bill gates had a pocket full of $20 bills, and there was a hole in that pocket, and one fell out every 3 seconds, he would lose money if he stopped what he was doing, and picked it up.
Also if he put all of Microsoft's money under his bed, in $20 bills, and then rolled off the bed at night, it would take him nearly 10 minutes to hit the floor.

lol the bed one made me lol.Lol

Actually google makes about $0.12 per search Big Grin I have to find the article I found that from again.

If that is true, I would definitely consider Google a monopoly

But, they are in no way a monoply, as they don't have sole control over one market, or near sole control, they are just in lots of markets, and thus can't be classed as a monopoly Wink

Exactly.  They're not in one market, instead, they're in many, many smaller ones.

which are ALL, guess what, on the INTERNET.

but as i said, they're not monopoly, but they do are in LOTS of markets which basically run on the internet.

Yeah they would have to buy out or merge with a couple of the other big guys.  Look at Microsoft they have the software, the search engine, advertising, and they pretty much were only labeled a monopoly because of the  dependency between the software and the computers and they seemed to have cleared that up.
The best way for me to put this is that google is the walmart of the web Lol
Google does not dominate anywhere major except the search engine market, where they outstretch msn and yahoo combine. because, they are in every market on the internet, they are so huge. But they are not a monopoly. They have plenty of competition. As for Walmart, only in the states. In Canada, they are being beaten by Loblaws, so far, and hope Loblaws win Canada is getting to Americanize these days.
I don't think Google is even close to a monopoly. Yahoo is not only worth more than Google, they get the most traffic.  (msn.com is number 2 and Google is number 3)

Yahoo buys a lot of companies too, e.g, flickr, del.icio.us, upcoming,.

Google has to squash Yahoo before it can become a monopoly.
That's true Gaz, but I was talking about Google as a whole. The fact is, Google has direct competition in everything they do, whether it be searching, dynamic home pages, videos, blogging services, etc.

How can they be called a monopoly?

I've used Yahoo as an alternative to Google many times. Not to mention all the specialized (niche) search engines that are popping up, i.e., deep web search engines, image search engines, blogoshere search engines.

edit: I went back and reread the entire thread. Disregard the above question. Smile Apparently we agree it isn't a monopoly.
