i think they are, and they actually do sell products :o. but just not directly. they sell ads (also products like google earth, which there's a free version also)

but they are the good guys Smile they make good products and i support them. but they don't do any thing wrong like microsoft. people are still free to choose. bacause they're really good, that's why people use their service, not because people are forced to.

Yes, I think they are becoming a monopoly, also they sell stuuf, not just indirectly such as Ads and such, but. http://www.googlestore.com

i didn't know they had that site, and i knew quite a lot of google Smile. i guess google is just too big to know everything about.

yes, they sell stuff, but they don't sell products of companies which they've aquired. most of the softwares they sell are free. they've made those free.

But, they are in no way a monoply, as they don't have sole control over one market, or near sole control, they are just in lots of markets, and thus can't be classed as a monopoly Wink
i think first off all you have to know what the term monopoly means:

Quote:
a persistent market situation where there is only one provider of a product or service. Monopolies are characterized by a lack of economic competition for the good or service that they provide and a lack of viable substitute goods

Google was just a search engine at first, and didn't make any money from that, and still doesn't. Google is much more than a search engine, you can see what they do, yes they earn loads of money, but it is spread over lots of different markets, where there are lots of competitors which are either better or equaly as good as them.

looks like they take over other compnaies almost every month.

Actually google makes about $0.12 per search Big Grin I have to find the article I found that from again.

If that is true, I would definitely consider Google a monopoly

no, because, hey, there're a lot more other search engines people can choose of. a monopoly means people are forced to use their services, they have no choice. so, actually it doesn't have anything to do with money.

If you actually read the arctile, you would find out that they arn't making the money from the actually search, it's from the advertising clicks. Pfft.
fair enough, i was only making an underlying point that society as a whole is under educated in important subjects Smile

I don't think Google is even close to a monopoly. Yahoo is not only worth more than Google, they get the most traffic.  (msn.com is number 2 and Google is number 3)

Yahoo buys a lot of companies too, e.g, flickr, del.icio.us, upcoming,.

Google has to squash Yahoo before it can become a monopoly.

your basing your ranking of search engines on how much traffic they get, what balls, not only does yahoo and msn offer more than one service and thats there portal page, google only really offers one service from that page.
