Other site has to have been indexed by a search engine for it to work.

copyscrape is the best way to find out whether your site's been copied or not.
the protection programs don't always work. there's always a way to break throught the protection.
i've been searching around for a bit, this is what i've found
http://www.copysafe.net/ (more image or media protection, not really text)
http://www.antssoft.com/htmlprotector/ (using javascript encryption, i don't think it's efficient)
both of them aren't free though
i think there're also companies who will protect the content for you, like you register with them and make some kind of copyright. then they'll make sure nobody copies your site. not pretty sure this system exists, but i have the feeling i've seen such a company before

Do you have any examples of this? I went to the link but it asked for an URL. I know nothing of mine has been copied. But, when I was building a few web pages one time, I copied and saved my work from the website and opened it with my Coffecup html editor and right at the top in the html code it said This is copied from XXXXX site. I was like DANG. why did it save that way. I didn't know abou this copy safe thing. If I still had that web page I could test copy safe on it I guess.
I don't understand how anything can tell if you copied text from another website.? how the heck would that work?
I know if the words match it'd be an obvious copy. but how does it work really?
I did see some people arguing the other day on another site, one accusing the other of copying an article from associate press, and the other denying it, claiming the articles were tested with copy safe and the conclusion is they are not copied.
Am I stupid, or just lost?
PS. i hope reeds orchard doesnt know I stole some of their apple and table cloth pictures. :o
I've saved plenty of html over the last two years, seeing how it works.

it doesn't matter when you save it on your pc to read, print, or doing whatever, but you may not using a copyrighted text/content on your own website, without mentioning the source (it depends on the license agreement stuff, like wikipedia, you always have to mention the source if you've copied an article from them)
websites which can test that like copyscape.com use search engines to find a duplicate, just like that, i think when it finds a certain amount of exact words of your site on the other sites it will just show it, it's not necessary a copy though.
if you didn't understand my explanation this is how i think it works: it copy a piece of text of the site you fill in and entered that piece of text to search engines, and it displays the search resullt. (it will have to compare different pieces of text first, etc.)
so you can just copy a content of other site if it doesn't copyrighted or something. so don't worry about your html files. it depends on how you use the copied file, normally you can't use it on your own site or publish it under your name, but you can use it or print it just for yourself ofcourse.
btw, when your save a webpage (html) directly from a browser - using "file>save" as or something (i guess only on IE, not sure) it will automatically save the source's url also. that's why you see that message thing in your html editor.
PS. if orchard (who/what ever he is) finds this post of yours he will find out you've copied

I often receive and send articles fo a writers group that I work for. I have to check each article that I receive from http://www.dustball.com. It is good to check articles - but not for checking sites.
