Adobe llustrator ! (i'm using CS2 version) it's not free though, but for a real graphic design it's excellent. the only one of it's kind.

look at the Webbers Corner logo, i've designed it with illustrator (and i'm very very proud of it), and it's been modified with photoshop by tyros8000 for the header.
Illustrator and Photoshop are in a league of there own, and are used by the top dogs of graphic design.
i would also recommend both them softwares but to get them you willl have to dish out a lot of money.

for some freebie software try GIMP, getpaint.net or i am sure there are others.
i recommend vector image editor (dunno how to call it, a program which handles vector image files) if you want to design logo's.

i can remember only 2 program atm: illustrator (told you already) and flash. freehand used to be macromedia's equivalent of illustrator, but since adobe had aquired macromedia, they stop developping it.

there's also an open source (or freeware, dunno anymore) vector thingy. Inkscape or somethng. i don't think it can do many things, i haven't tried it.
Yea, Gimp is pretty good for being free.Photoshop and Illustrator are lightyears ahead tho, I suggest you try to get ur hands on a copy of one of thoseSmile
you could get a 30 day trial of both of them if you register to the adobe website (http://www.adobe.com).  then you could compare GIMP with it to see what suits you the most.
i've been looking around; inkscape and xara xtreme are pretty good comparing the price (inkscape is free and xara xtreme is very very cheap) you should look at the galleries, they have very good illustrations, some of them are even difficult to make with illustrator.

ofcours the "major" graphic editor are still: illustrator, freehand and corel draw. but illustrator is the most popular one (and the most expensive.). i might try corel products soon, as i'm very curious, i've heard a lot of them but never see somebody use them yet, maybe i'll start with corel draw.

different sites:
inkscape: http://www.inkscape.org/
-> galleries: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Galleries
-> showcase: http://www.inkscape.org/showcase/index.p...s/base.css
xara: http://www.xara.com/
-> xara xtreme: http://www.xara.com/products/xtreme/
-> xara xtreme for linux (opensource - free!): http://www.xaraxtreme.org/
corel: http://www.corel.com/

never tried it seriously. i had installed it long time ago, it seemed ok at that time. but i have uninstalled already. if you look at the galleries  you'll see it can make amzing things, but i think you'll have to be experienced to do that.
my opinion, for very simple graphic artworks inkscape could be the best alternative.

don't forget xara xtreme, the linux version is also free. have a look at:

especially at "photo realistic". i think it deserves a big "wow!"
